September 2026: Member Spotlight - Cosco Jones

Some people find their calling early. Cosco Jones found his at age three, building with Legos and sketching houses in a neighborhood that was often overlooked but never short on potential. That early fascination with building things and helping people never left him, it just grew up alongside him into a career built on energy justice, sustainable building science, and making sure low-income communities aren't left paying the price for inefficient homes.

Jones's path toward sustainability sharpened during his senior year at Norfolk State University, where an internship with South Hampton Roads Habitat for Humanity introduced him to LEED and green building programs. That exposure set his direction. He went on to earn his Master's Degree at Virginia Tech, narrowing his focus to residential energy efficiency and building science.

He graduated into a recession that hit the construction industry hard, but instead of stepping away from his field, he found ways to serve within it. As an Assistant House Leader with AmeriCorps and Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, he sharpened his skills while giving back. From there, he became a Technical Adviser with EarthCraft, a regional green building program, where he built the technical foundation and community connections that would eventually let him launch his own company.

Today, Jones runs Jones Sustainable Solutions Group, a sustainable lifestyle consulting and coaching company specializing in residential energy efficiency. He conducts inspections and assessments on homes and light commercial properties, performs blower door and duct blaster testing, and builds custom energy models that account for everything from windows and insulation to appliances and light bulbs, all aimed at one goal: lowering his clients' total cost of living through energy efficiency.

As a certified HERS Rater (Home Energy Rating System), Jones has spent over a decade translating technical building science into terms non-technical homeowners can actually use and act on. He's candid about the obstacles that came with building a career and a business in a field where he's often one of few minorities represented, from navigating the stigma of race to closing the knowledge gap around sustainable building in under-resourced communities. His answer has been consistent: stay visible, stay approachable, and keep showing up, whether that's for a corporate client or a homeowner who's never heard of an energy audit before.

That commitment to closing the knowledge gap has made Jones a go-to voice on energy justice in Georgia. He recently joined WABE's "Closer Look" to unpack what a proper energy audit should actually involve, and why skipping one can cost Georgia homebuyers long after closing day. Georgia ranks among the top five states in the country for household energy burden, and low-income households consistently spend a larger share of their income on energy costs than others. Jones has made it his work to change that math, one home, one policy conversation, one audit at a time.

He currently sits on the Board for Eco-Action and serves on the City of Atlanta's Clean Energy Advisory, extending his impact beyond individual homes and into the policy decisions that shape energy burden across entire communities.

Cosco Jones represents exactly the kind of practitioner our network was built around: someone who turned technical expertise into a tool for community equity, who never let being "one of few" in his field slow him down, and who understands that sustainability isn't just about buildings, it's about who gets to afford to live in them comfortably.

From Legos at age three to a career spent lowering energy burdens for Georgia families, Cosco Jones is still building, just at a much bigger scale. We are honored to have him on our board and as a comrade in this work.
