We are honored to feature Denise Smith-Archer for our September member spotlight! Denise is a multifaceted leader—an engineer, educator, and artist—who seamlessly blends her expertise in engineering with a passion for education and the arts. As a fierce advocate for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) education, she uses these disciplines as powerful tools for community building.
Denise earned her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 2016 and has held roles as a transportation engineer, researcher, planner, and professor. Currently, she serves as the Chief Operating Officer at Hummingbird Firm, a consulting firm specializing in community engagement, data analytics, and training across the environmental, energy, and transportation sectors.
Denise’s commitment to education is unwavering. She has taught at K-12, college, and graduate levels and has actively contributed to STEM programs in Tennessee, Georgia, Michigan, and Washington, D.C. Alongside her husband, Denise co-authored the 'Black Gems in STEM' series, which includes academic success workbooks for students in grades 4-8. Their work comes to life each summer in the 'Black Gems in STEM Summer Program,' where students embark on an exciting journey in the 'Search for the Stolen Black Gems in STEM.'
